Dr Louise McDonnell
As a chartered counselling psychologist, I spent 10 years working as a counsellor, qualifying in 2009 with a specialism in CBT. While I began on a cognitive behavioural degree course, with humanistic underpinning, I originally believed that the eclectic integration between these two techniques defined who I was as a therapist.
A Masters in Psychology really broadened my view with the introduction of developmental models and this led to my decision to complete my doctorate in counselling psychology. From the successful completion of this study I would describe my approach as theoretically integrative, all of my work is informed by a Rogerian approach based on the importance of the core conditions, however I believe that the developmental approaches in particular Erikson, Freud as well as Objection Relation theories gives us the deep insight into our ability to form bonds, develop resilience and thrive.
I also have a strong interest in the impact of the social and familial context in which individuals grow and develop and the interaction between internal and external processes. I believe it is the complexities of our internal narrative and external expectations which hamper our ability to adapt to change. I have a special interest in trauma, identity and the impact of life transitions.
